North Korea ready to allow inspectors into missile sites, Pompeo says

Kim, Pompeo agree to 2nd US-North Korea summit 'at earliest date'

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says North Korea is ready to allow global inspectors to visit its nuclear and missile test sites.

The Trump administration's recent allegations and actions against China have "directly impacted our mutual trust and cast a shadow over our bilateral relations", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Monday, casting the sudden deterioration in the relationship in surprisingly undiplomatic terms. "We believe that we need to keep our relationship on the right track", Wang told Pompeo at the start of a meeting.

The trade war between China and the USA is however being seen as a barrier to co-operation in the North Korean crisis. Pompeo didn't meet with Kim on that trip.

The KCNA said that Kim also expressed "will" and "conviction" to make progress on issues of mutual concern, apparently indicating the denuclearization talks that have nearly been stalled since the June summit in Singapore.

Pompeo has refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a US position on North Korea's demand for a formal end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility.

North Korea is ready to allow worldwide inspectors into its nuclear and missile sites.

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Kim had invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-Ri test site in order to confirm that it had been dismantled. Last week, Vice President Mike Pence stepped up the US pressure campaign against Beijing, going beyond the trade war by accusing China of both "malign" efforts to undermine President Donald Trump ahead of next month's congressional elections and of reckless military action in the South China Sea.

Sources in New Delhi told The Indian Express these will cover areas such as nuclear, space, economic issues, among others. The two are slated to discuss a number of key regional and global topics, including the USA sanctions on Iranian oil.

The U.S. and Japan have pushed for the North to compile and turn over a detailed list of its nuclear sites to be dismantled as a next step in the process.

Pompeo, however, played down the differences.

High-level exchanges between the two countries have been frozen, including a planned diplomatic and security meeting between US Secretary of Defence James Mattis and Chinese defence minister Wei Fenghe originally scheduled for mid-October in Beijing. And so there'll be tactical places where we'll have debates and disagreements.

It added that there was an agreement to hold working-level talks to arrange a second summit between Kim and Trump. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.

The North has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and has insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks. USA officials have thus far said the penalties will remain in place until the North's denuclearization is fully verified.

"Recently, as the US side has been constantly escalating trade friction toward China, it has also adopted a series of actions on the Taiwan issue that harm China's rights and interests, and has made groundless criticism of China's domestic and foreign policies", Wang said at a joint appearance with Pompeo.

"Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula".
