'Thank god for Taylor Swift': Voter registration spikes after Swift endorses candidates

After 24-hours and almost two million Instagram likes later, Vote.org said Tennessee voter registration jumped 65,000 in a day. That's huge, given that just over 190,000 new voters registered nationwide in September and 57,000 in August. Specifically for the state of Tennessee, where Taylor will be voting, they received 5,183 registrations in state this month with 2,144 of those registrations coming after Taylor's Instagram statement. The number of unique visitors to the site also soared, with 155,940 unique visitors in the day following the post.

In Swift's home state of Tennessee, where she voiced support for two Democratic candidates running in this year's midterms, voter registrations have also jumped. Channeling the fear about the future that two-thirds of her generation faces, Swift connected her "Tennessee values" to critical votes that a member of Congress takes, chipping away at one of the most significant barriers to voting, which is seeing the tangible impact that participation can make. Compare that to the site's daily average of 14,000 visitors.

Officials at Vote.org who analyzed the applications since Sunday also noticed a drastic shift in the demographics of those who have registered.

The 28-year-old said she had chosen to speak out now "due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years".

Blackburn has hit back at Ms Swift, saying she thinks her constituents care more about her being endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce and the National Rifle Association, than a pop star. "But people would still rather believe that she is the one who is pushing Trump's agenda". Swift wrote that Blackburn is against gay rights, equal pay for women and legislation to protect women from domestic violence, stalking and date rape. She serves in the United States House of Representatives.

Stating that she would not be supporting Marsha Blackburn, Swift said, "As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I can not support Marsha Blackburn".

When asked whether she thought Swift's decision could sway voters, Blackburn said she believed her constituents cared more about who supported her.

All I have to say is, if something like this happens to any girl, in any industry, she must speak up and take a charge. Patekar has denied the allegations and had sent Dutta a legal notice to withdraw the claims and issue an apology.

"Taylor has never to my knowledge come out and said anything about her being pro-Trump", he said.

"Thank God for Taylor Swift", Kamari added.

Instead, throwing her support behind Blackburn's Democratic opponent Phil Bredesen and Democratic representative Jim Cooper.

Swift's enormous reach - she has 112 million Instagram followers and 84 million Twitter followers - underscores the way celebrities can leverage their online presence by sending messages instantaneously to millions of fans.

In October 2016, 405,000 people registered on Vote.org, the largest age group being people in their 30s, said Raven Brooks, the website's chief operating officer. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me.

In contrast to Swift, West has controversially backed Mr Trump, posting photos of himself wearing Make American Great Again hats and praising the President's "dragon energy".
