An acting chief prosecutor and a public prosecutor assigned by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office carried out the probe at the consulate with Saudi officials.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who had earlier speculated that "rogue killers" may be responsible from Khashoggi's disappearance, dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet King Salman over the case that has strained the Americans' relationship with the Saudis. A team arrived by unmarked police cars at the consulate but said nothing to journalists waiting outside as they entered the building.

Khashoggi, a US resident, Washington Post columnist and leading critic of the powerful Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after entering the consulate to get marriage documents.

"The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", Trump told reporters, echoing earlier comments he made on Twitter.

USA media reported on Monday that the kingdom is considering an admission that Khashoggi died after an interrogation that went wrong during an intended abduction.

"Given (that) there seems to be clear evidence that Mr. Khashoggi entered the consulate and has never been seen since, the onus is on the Saudi authorities to reveal what happened to him from that point onwards", Bachelet said. "I mean, who knows?"

"It depends on how well they cleaned it up", Prinz told the AP.

The attackers then used the list of friends they collected to "eventually steal access tokens for about 30 million people". All Facebook users compromised during the ordeal will be notified of the happening in the coming days, Facebook promised.

Turkey has wanted to search the consulate for days. Permission apparently came after a late Sunday-night call between King Salman and the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Khashoggi was once a prominent member of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a top adviser to the royal family.

Reporters waiting outside the consulate in Istanbul's Levent district said early October 16 that Turkish crime scene investigators turned off all the lights and surveyed the interior of the Saudi consulate with a special blue light used in forensics probes. Surveillance footage previously leaked in Turkish media shows vehicles moving between the consulate and the consul's home immediately after Khashoggi's disappearance.

The interrogation was reportedly supposed to lead to Khashoggi's abduction from Turkey. But he left the country in June 2017, fearing for his safety after writing articles critical of the government, particularly Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Meanwhile, the chiefs of Blackstone and BlackRock, two major USA investment firms, joined an exodus of executives pulling out of Crown Prince's "Davos in the Desert" summit. Executive Chairman Bill Ford.

Trump previously warned of "severe punishment" for the kingdom if it was found to be involved in Khashoggi's disappearance, which has spooked investors in Saudi Arabia and SoftBank, a Japanese firm that manages tens of billions of dollars for the kingdom.

"If they don't buy it from us, they're going to buy it from Russian Federation or they're going to buy it from China", he said.

Trump's warning drew an angry response on Sunday from Saudi Arabia and its state-linked media, including a suggestion that Riyadh could wield its oil production as a weapon. The US president has been after King Salman and OPEC to boost production for weeks to drive down high crude oil prices, caused in part by the coming re-imposition of oil sanctions on Iran after the US withdrawal from that's country's nuclear deal with world powers.
