Suneja who hailed from Delhi, according to his LinkedIn profile was employed with Lion Air since 2011 and had accumulated more than 6,000 flying hours, says an official statement from Lion Air.

Indonesia's air travel industry is booming, with the number of domestic passengers growing significantly over the past decade, but it has acquired a reputation for poor regulation.

National Guard troops can perform those same functions, so it was not immediately clear why active-duty forces were sought. The troops are part of a security operation that is expected to be up and running by October 30.

Lion Air is a budget airline based in the country. Relatives and loved ones of the passengers have gathered at the airport in that city.

The Lion Air plane JT610 that crashed in Indonesia on Monday morning was assigned to Indian-origin pilot Bhavye Suneja and his co-pilot Harvino.

The Lion Air jet that crashed was fit for operations, the airline said in a statement.

Before Monday's crash, the airline had not reported a fatal accident since 2004, when 25 people died after the DC-9 they were on, crashed amid heavy rain at Solo City in central Java.
