President Donald Trump has pushed the boundaries of campaign finance rules with a controversial new video that accuses Democrats of blindly opening US borders to undocumented immigrants, even those who kill police officers.

Many recalled the infamous "Willie Horton" campaign ad from the 1988 presidential election between George H.W. Bush and Democrat Michael Dukakis.

The controversial video, pinned to the top of his social media feed, blames the Democrats for "letting in" Luis Bracamontes - an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who killed two police officers in Sacramento in 2014.

"Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes, killed our people!" reads text on the ad, which shows an unrepentant Bracamontes smiling in court and promising to kill more officers if he gets out. "This ad, and your full approval of it, will condemn you and your bigoted legacy forever in the annals of America's history books". The ad, which was financed by supporters of Bush's campaign focused on Horton, a convicted murderer, who was released on a weekend furlough program (which had been supported by Dukakis) and committed assault and rape while he was out.

The survey was taken almost a week after former President Barack Obama took credit for the economic gains made during Trump's time in office.

He got himself in the right place at the right time; he's gaining experience and it was great to see him get up and get the goal. He told them he would look for replacements in January if they were unable to produce the quality required to win trophies.

As for the new video, though, the campaign was silent Thursday and Parscale did not respond to requests for comment. "We understand this is an issue that motivates his base, but the economic issues are what we really need to win these swing voters because they are who's going to decide who controls the House", adding that Trump "is solidifying swing voters who were already leaning Democratic and are now definitely going vote for Democratic candidates".

CNN described the video as "the most racially charged national political ad in 30 years".

At that time, President George Bush had just begun his first term, and Bracamontes was again deported. He then reportedly returned to the United States in 2001, was deported, then returned again in 2002, all during Republican George W. Bush's administration.

57 percent said they approve of the job Trump is doing on the economy compared to 43 percent who said they disagree. The ad was widely criticised for emphasising that Horton was black. The man also featured in a January video tied to the anniversary of Trump's January 20, 2017 inauguration.
