According to the United Nations, at least 10,000 people have been killed since the coalition entered the conflict.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 to push back the Houthis and return President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi to power.

The Houthi-affiliated Masirah television station reported that more than 60 airstrikes were launched by the Saudi-led coalition against the Kilo16 area and other surrounding areas in Hodeidah during the past hours.

U.S. defence secretary Jim Mattis and secretary of state Mike Pompeo have called for an end to the Yemen war, including air strikes by the coalition.

According to Unicef, 1.8 million Yemeni children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, and the lives of 400,000 severely affected children are under threat.

Loud explosions were heard across Yemen's Red Sea coastal city of Hodeidah on Friday evening, as pro-government forces began a wide-scale military offensive against the Houthi rebels.

The airstrikes in Sanaa came days after a USA call for an urgent halt to the Saudi-Iran proxy war in Yemen and the start of negotiations in November toward a political settlement of the conflict.

The attack targeted King Khalid air base in Khamis Mushait city in southwest the kingdom, said the rebel channel, adding the attack was "in retaliation for the Friday's Saudi-led coalition airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport in the (rebel-held) capital Sanaa".

The coalition had massed thousands of troops near the city on Wednesday, in a move to pressure the Houthis to return to UN-sponsored peace talks. He is preparing to visit Taiz, Yemen's third largest city and a flashpoint since the Houthis drove the government out of Sanaa in 2014, according to sources close to the United Nations talks. The port is a key entry point for food and humanitarian aid, but the coalition says the Houthis also use it to import weapons.

Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) said that at least 56,000 people have died in the Yemen war, a figure much higher than the 10,000 figure given by most news agencies.

"The time is now for the cessation of hostilities, including missile and UAV (drone) strikes from Houthi-controlled areas into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the UAE".
