'Thank you President T': Trump congratulates himself as holiday break ends

An Associated Press reporter saw USA agents shoot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate several points along the border.

The United States closed its busiest border crossing with Mexico on Sunday after Mexican police broke up a protest of Central American migrants massed in Tijuana, scattering some demonstrators toward the border where USA officers hurled tear gas from the American side.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol responded by dispersing the crowd with tear gas, causing an uproar among pro-immigration activists who believe the caravans should be allowed into the United States without question.

Mr McAleenan added: "As the events unfolded, quick, decisive and effective action prevented an extremely risky situation".

"They were being rushed by some very tough people and they used tear gas", Trump replied.

Rodney S. Scott, chief patrol agent for the San Diego sector, also told CNN that USA officials arrested 42 people, mostly adult males, who made it into the United States.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to Border Patrol agents and asking to claim asylum", Scott said.

But U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said the administration's concerns about the caravan "were borne out and on fully display" Sunday.

More than 5,000 migrants have been camped in and around a sports complex in Tijuana after making their way through Mexico in recent weeks via caravan.

And he threatened to shut down the entire US-Mexico border over the approach of the few thousand migrants. The president also told the troops that the country is doing exceptionally well on his watch.

"The tear gas was not deployed at the children", Mr. Judd countered, saying migrants were attempting to use them as shields.

He wrote on Twitter, "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

President Trump said he would not hesitate to close the border altogether if he feels the US might be losing "control".

Mexico has begun taking steps to increase security near its border with the United States.

Trump wants migrants to remain in Mexico while their United States asylum cases are adjudicated. Migrants in a caravan of Central Americans scrambled to reach the USA border, catching rides on buses and trucks for hundreds of miles in the last leg of their journey Wednesday as the first sizable groups began arriving in the border city of Tijuana. "Congress, fund the WALL!"

The same tear gas agent that the Trump administration is taking heat for deploying against a border mob this weekend is actually used fairly frequently - including a few times a month during some years under President Obama, according to Homeland Security data.

"We did not use kinetic force on any children".

Hundreds of people - including women and children - had been protesting and chanting "we aren't criminals!"

"We were told that if we crossed (the first barrier) they would give us asylum, because we were already in the United States", said Flor Jimenez, a 32-year-old Honduran woman who was among those who turned back along with her husband, sister and young daughter.
