As the last United States president to have served in World War II and the country's last Cold War leader, the end of Mr Bush's time in the White House marked the end of a political era.

Trump tweeted his statement from Buenos Aires, where he arrived on Thursday for the G20 summit.

"Along with his full life of service to country, we will remember President Bush for his devotion to family - especially the love of his life, Barbara".

George W Bush would go on to be elected president in 2000 after Mr Clinton and served two terms.

He was also the director of Central Intelligence Agency under the extremely popular Ronald Reagan and was the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Only one other U.S. president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.

While he battled illnesses this year, including being admitted for a blood infection one day after his wife Barbara's funeral in April, he was the first former president to reach the age of 94.

Bush, who suffers from Parkinson's disease and is wheelchair-bound, has been hospitalized on several occasions for various ailments in recent years, including pneumonia. Bush formed a coalition of nations, including the Soviet Union, to denounce Hussein's actions and liberate Kuwait in "Operation Desert Shield" and eventually "Operation Desert Storm".

In August 1990 he responded to Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, creating a national coalition led by the United States that liberated the oil-rich yet tiny nation but stopped short of toppling the Iraqi dictator.

Following his presidency, the Bushes relocated to Houston, Texas, where they settled down and became active in the community. He was the son of a senator from CT and the daughter of a wealthy investment banker.
