Huawei executive arrested in Canada for 'violating USA sanctions on Iran'

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

"While the Commerce Department focused its attention on ZTE, this news highlights that Huawei is also violating U.S. Law", Van Hollen said in a statement.

The chief financial officer for China's global tech giant, Huawei Technologies, has been arrested in Richmond and is facing extradition to the U.S.

Justice Department spokesman Ian McLeod said Wednesday that Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Saturday.

The Huawei statement said Meng, who also has gone by the English names Cathy and Sabrina, was detained when she was transferring flights in Canada.

He said Meng is facing unidentified accusations from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of NY.

"Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the Chief Financial Officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for breaking USA sanctions against Iran, " he said.

Huawei said its relationship with Skycom was "a normal business partnership", and said its business in Iran was in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that American authorities are investigating whether the Chinese tech company violated sanctions on Iran.

The US Justice Department probe is being run out of the US attorney's office in Brooklyn, the sources said. American prosecutors are seeking to have her moved to the USA as it investigates whether the company broke trade sanctions against Iran.

‘2.0’ records two-day box office collections of Rs 109 crore
This brings the film's total collection Hindi to about Rs 38.25 crore, showing a minor drop on day-to-day comparison. Despite the mixed reviews, Rajinkanth and Akshay Kumar's first movie together -2.0 has kicked-off on a great note.

She was arrested because she attempted to evade the trade embargo placed by the United States on Iran, The Globe and Mail reported, citing a Canadian source with knowledge of the arrest.

The Chinese embassy in Ottawa issued a statement condemning the action.

Ms. Meng's arrest comes amid a year-long USA government campaign against a company it views as a national-security threat.

A foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said then that China hoped the US would refrain from taking actions that could further undermine investor confidence in the USA business environment and harm its domestic economy.

Australia and New Zealand have already turned down Huawei's offer to supply 5G equipment to telecommunication companies, citing security risks.

Most recently, the U.K.'s BT said it plans to remove Huawei equipment from its core network.

Huawei's arrested CFO is the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei.

Huawei, the world's biggest network equipment maker ahead of Ericsson and Nokia, has said Beijing has no influence over its operations. A proposal for the sale of the HP equipment to Iran contained at least 13 pages marked "Huawei confidential" and included the Huawei logo, Reuters said. Huawei also didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
