Who is new Ohio State coach Ryan Day?

Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

Ohio State University football coach Urban Meyer to announce retirement

Brown, who was hired to coach the Tar Heels last week after spending five years off the field, said Meyer's decision has put things into perspective for him.

Added current Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst of Meyer, "Obviously I have a lot of respect for what he's done".

He has been dealing with an arachnoidal cyst inside his skull since first diagnosed in 1998, and which flared up again in the middle of this season causing severe headaches at times. This also isn't the first time Meyer has stepped away from coaching. But with God, my family, and friends, I would like to announce that I am decommitting from The Ohio State University.

However, when the day finally came - when Meyer finally chose to walk away, at least for now, it didn't feel the way I thought it would.

By stepping down now, Meyer ensures the greatest continuity for Ohio State.

In almost seven full seasons as the head coach of the Buckeyes, Meyer has gone 82-9, winning 10 or more games in each of his first six seasons; the Buckeyes are 9-1 with Meyer as the head coach in 2018 and can get a 10th win by beating Washington in the Granddaddy of Them All next month. Perhaps just as important as all of that, Meyer never lost to MI. He spent one year as a college football analyst for ESPN before taking the Ohio State job citing improved health and life decisions. He has not yet said of any plans for after retirement.

Day also could, in theory, draw interest for National Football League head-coaching jobs.

Ohio State University Athletic Director Gene Smith named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day as the program's 25th head coach.

Meyer led the Gators to national championships in 2006 and 2008 and went 13-1 three times at UF (also in 2009).

Meyer took a leave of absence from Florida in 2010 after suffering from chest pains.

The Buckeyes' strong finish this season belied on-the-field problems that made for a stressful season for Meyer and his staff.

Here's a look at Meyer's career vs. Penn State. "I followed my heart and not my head". And so when he steps down at Ohio State, this is very different. He also rushed for three touchdowns against Maryland, salvaging one of the Buckeyes' worst defensive performances this season and highlighting exactly how much Ohio State needed him this year.

It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native.

His contract was extended in April by two years through 2022, increasing Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018 with annual 6 percent raises.

This does not account for the two years at Utah or his first class at Florida, but in the last 12 recruiting classes Meyer signed his average ranking was between 3 and 4.
