Trump reportedly picks Heather Nauert to be UN ambassador

Trump will send a tweet on Friday morning about choosing Nauert to replace outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who announced her resignation in October, Fox News reported, citing multiple sources. Haley also didn't have foreign policy experience when she took the United Nations posting, but she had twice been elected governor of SC.

Trump told reporters last month that Nauert was "excellent", adding, "She's been a supporter for a long time".

That means Nauert would wield less clout than her predecessor, both at the United Nations and within the administration, and as a result, would pose nowhere near the challenge to national security adviser John Bolton, White House chief of staff John Kelly or Pompeo.

Nauert joined the State Department in April 2017.

She has served under two secretaries of state - Rex Tillerson and her current boss Mike Pompeo, but prior to that had little foreign policy experience.

Haley took a particularly forceful posture against Russian Federation, assailing the Kremlin at United Nations security council meetings over its aggression in Ukraine and support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, even as Trump remained reluctant to criticize Vladimir Putin.

However, according to the Globe and Mail , she was arrested on suspicion she violated US trade sanctions against Iran. The arrest sends clear signals that the road to smooth the relationship between China and U.S is far from smooth.

He pulled the United States out of the UN human rights body in September, citing bias towards Israel, and his administration has cut funding for the UN refugee agency and previous year proposed U.S. funding cuts for aid and diplomacy that could curb the work of the global body.

Nikki Haley was born Nimrata Randhawa to an immigrant family from India. She is married to Michael Haley, an officer in the National Guard.

The state department has made no comment. Haley was the first woman and the first member of an ethnic minority group to be elected as the governor of the state.

"Makes us wonder what does the president mean when he says 'only the best?'" She criticized Trump for not speaking out against white supremacists, his stance on immigration and his demeanor. Haley, former governor of the U.S. state of SC, said she did not know what she would do next, but clarified that she would campaign for Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election. Some saw it as an olive branch from Trump.

"If Nauert is nominated and approved, people will be interested to see whether she's willing and able to do the diplomatic toil or whether she will see this as an extension of the spokesman position and focus more on presentation of United States position before the Security Council", said Gowan. But she did not agree with Trump on some issues, including Russian Federation sanctions and the significance of the world body itself.

Haley, a rising star in the Republican Party, is often mentioned as a possible candidate for the 2020 presidential elections.
