Google Plans to Spend Over $1 Billion on New York City Campus

Google is expanding in NYC in a big way

As it stands, Google employs over 7,000 individuals in New York City - the new campus is expected to more than double that amount. Google put its first office in NY almost 20 years ago, and plans to move into the new campus space by 2020. And last week, Apple detailed plans to build a $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, as well as open offices in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, California.

The news follows Seattle-based Amazon's announcement a month ago that it would set up new headquarters in New York's Long Island City neighbourhood and in Arlington, Virginia, creating upwards of 25,000 jobs in each location. Projects have included outfitting the New York City Public Library System with free Wi-Fi hotspots for public school students and families without home internet access. The company has obtained leases for 315 and 345 Hudson Street.

"We believe that as our company grows, we have a responsibility to support the communities we call home".

Tech companies see NY as a way to gain a new perspective, one that is different from that of Silicon Valley, which can be seen as an "out-of-touch echo chamber", Bartels said.

"Our investment in NY is a huge part of our commitment to grow and invest in US facilities, offices and jobs".

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski apologizes for homophobic comment
Brzezinski was absent from the MSNBC program Thursday, which a spokesman said was a planned day off to deal with a family matter. I'm dead serious, I'm asking: "are these the words of a patriot?" " SUPER BAD choice of words ", she wrote on Twitter.

Google hopes to start moving into the building by 2022.

The New York Times reports that not all New Yorkers are happy about the company's expansion, however, with some Chelsea residents complaining that the Google's presence nearby has been a gentrifying force while some restaurant owners claim that the company's free-food-at-work policy has affected their business in the area. "In fact, we're growing faster outside the Bay Area than within it", Ruth Porat, the chief financial officer of Alphabet and Google, said in the statement.
