The publicist of Penny Marshall is reporting that the star has died in her Los Angeles home.

"I'm sad to read she has passed". She directed Tom Hanks in Big in 1988, becoming the first woman in history to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million. So while Mary Tyler Moore's character had sex and spoke about it - even in winking ways - that was almost off the table for Laverne & Shirley.

Marshall became a star with the hit series "Laverne & Shirley", which ran from 1976 to 1983.

Hollywood stars and public figures are paying tribute to Marshall on social media, including Rosie O'Donnell, who starred in A League of Their Own.

Marshall was born in the Bronx and grew up in a Grand Concourse apartment.

Before Laverne & Shirley, Marshall appeared as sports writer Oscar Madison's secretary Myrna on the sitcom The Odd Couple and popped up as a neighbor of main character Mary Richards on Mary Tyler Moore.

Marshall reteamed with Hanks for A League of Their Own. "She always said, 'I had a great life, '" Hallin told the New York Post. "I thought it was something I should do".
