Cyber attack hits USA newspaper distribution

The Times, which was also affected by the attack, quoted a "source with knowledge of the situation" saying the attack was meant to disable infrastructure, rather than steal information.

It led to distribution delays in the Saturday edition of the Times, the Tribune, the Sun and other newspapers that share a production platform in Los Angeles. When some L.A. Times readers called to inquire about their print edition, the customer service phone lines were on the fritz.

"There is no evidence that customer credit card information or personally identifiable information has been compromised", she said.

While the Times noted it was aware of the problem on Friday, its technology teams attempted to fix it, but couldn't resolve the matter before production was set to begin.

All Tribune Publishing newspapers were impacted by the malware, with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, for example, unable to produce its paper in time for Saturday delivery.

Trump threatens to shut border if no wall money
In one tweet Friday, Trump warned: "word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it". Democrats will not consider any offers that have not been publicly endorsed by Trump himself, he said.

It is not clear what the motive of the attacks was, but the Tribune Publishing Company said in a statement "the personal data of our subscribers, online users, and advertising clients has not been compromised". "Most Union-Tribune subscribers were without a newspaper this morning as a computer virus infected the company's business systems and hobbled the ability to publish", Light wrote.

And staffers at some of the affected papers said they haven't received much information from management about the extent of the cyberattack.

The print edition of the Chicago Tribune was published Saturday without paid death notices and classified ads, while in other markets a similarly slimmed-down version of the Saturday newspaper will be delivered on Sunday, the company said.

"Usually when someone tries to disrupt a significant digital resource like a newspaper, you're looking at an experienced and sophisticated hacker", said Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, a nonprofit public interest research group.

A Tribune Publishing spokesperson didn't confirm the ransomware infection, but did say the incident was caused by "malware".
