Karpowitz said Lee appears to moving toward the camp of Republicans who are willing to work with the president, though that's not to say Romney isn't willing to do that.

This speech, perhaps one of the most critical ones about Trump from a current GOP member, led political analyst and Fox News commentator Bill Kristol to brand it a sign of growing resistance to the 45th United States president from within his own party.

In August 2017, Romney blasted Trump's response to the deadly clashes at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. And he said he didn't intend to comment on every tweet or fault.

In a floridly written op-ed published Tuesday, Romney praised Trump's boilerplate republican policies: tax cuts, regulatory rollbacks, and appointment of conservative judges. And in classic counter-puncher fashion, Trump questioned in a Wednesday morning tweet whether Romney would be "a Flake", a reference to outgoing Arizona GOP Sen. "I hope that over the course of the campaign I also earn the support and endorsement of the people of Utah".
