Rod Rosenstein To Leave After Next Attorney General's Confirmation

A source confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Rosenstein always expected to serve for about two years, and said he is likely leave after attorney general nominee Bill Barr is confirmed by the Senate. Rosenstein has said the memo had no impact on the department's work.

In May 2017, shortly after the president dumped Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey, Rosenstein appointed Mueller to take over the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties between Russians and Trump associates.

And Graham effectively confirmed the reporting about the pending Rosenstein departure. Also, Rosenstein told senators during his 2017 confirmation hearing that he would not remain in his post if he believed that he was being pressured to influence any investigations.

"I don't think there's any willingness by the president or the White House to push him out", Sanders told Fox News. His interim successor, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, consulted with Justice Department officials but ultimately decided not to recuse himself.

Deputy US Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller and remains his most visible Justice Department protector, is expected to leave his position soon after William Barr is confirmed as attorney general, an individual familiar with the plans said on Wednesday.

Barr met with Republican lawmakers as he works to build support for Senate confirmation as the top United States law enforcement official, and is slated to meet with the panel's top Democrat on Thursday, according to a department official. He has long overseen the investigation and has frequently drawn Trump's ire.

Warren's willingness to take on Trump in Twitter tangles and pointed public speeches could give some voters additional pause. Asked about the DNA test she took a year ago , Warren said she understands the difference between citizenship and ancestry.

But the assurances may not be enough for Democrats, since Graham also said he shared concerns raised by Barr about the possibility of a "slippery slope" from potentially alleging obstruction of justice against a president for firing a political appointee.

In September, Rosenstein went to the White House expecting to be fired after news reports surfaced that he had discussed secretly recording Trump and invoking a constitutional amendment to remove Trump as unfit for office. "Whether it's Bob Mueller or Rod Rosenstein or Matt Whitaker or Bill Barr, that investigation's going to be handled appropriately by the Department of Justice".

In November, the president said Rosenstein "should have never picked a special counsel" to investigate the Russian Federation matter and retweeted an image depicting Rosenstein and several other current and former officials in a prison cell.

Graham also told reporters that Barr said he wants the report Mueller is expected to produce to be "transparent".

Graham listed a number of questions that he had put to Barr: "I asked Mr. Barr directly, 'Do you think Mr. Mueller is on a witch hunt?' He said no".
