As the storm heads east, up to 16 inches (41 cm) of snow were likely in western Missouri and St. Louis.

The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore, reporting Saturday morning from the interstate west of St. Louis, noted that many people remained stuck in conditions he called "horrible".

A massive winter storm hit the US Rockies and Plains on Friday then punched east, with snow set to assault a 1,800-mile (1,609 km) corridor through the weekend, creating transportation "havoc" in the middle of the country.

At least four people have died and scores of motorists were injured and stranded, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Virginia State Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle was killed late Saturday after he lost control on Interstate 81 because of slick road conditions.

At St. Louis Lambert International Airport, "a winter storm has forced dozens of cancellations across all airlines at STL". Lighter snow is likely over far northern IL.

The National Weather Service says snow was to begin about 3 p.m.in southwestern IL and spread northeast throughout the evening, reaching the Chicago area by early Saturday.

The storm knocked out power for almost 200,000 people in Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us. The state police said earlier that they have responded to more than 200 snow-related crashes, including one other fatality.

Some locales along the projected path of Gia could receive up to a foot of snow through Sunday.

As light snow falls are expected to continue in the Midwest, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for areas in the Mid-Atlantic until Sunday afternoon.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency on Saturday in order to mitigate damage from snowfall, ice and high winds.

"We will have full crews in all night, keeping an eye on that", Becker said at a press conference Saturday evening.

Ronald W Harris, 73, of Gainesville, Georgia, died after his vehicle was struck by two tractor-trailers. Motorists found themselves stranded as snow-covered roads became impossible to pass.
