On both stage and screen, she won awards: picking up a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in Hello, Dolly! in 1964 and earning Oscar and Golden Globe nominations in 1968 for Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The show was a hit in LA and transferred to NY, where she later starred in the musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Many years ago, she joked she had only ever vomited once in her life - when she inadvertantly saw Barbara Streisand in the movie adaptation of Hello, Dolly (1969).

Channing's publicist, B. Harlan Boll, confirmed the news in a statement: "It is with extreme heartache that I have to announce the passing of an original Industry Pioneer, Legend and Icon - Miss Carol Channing". Her looks could have made her the younger sister of Danny La Rue, the actor who in 1984 played Mrs Levi in the West End.

The current touring company for "Hello Dolly!" released a statement Tuesday on the star's death.

The musical comedy star delighted audiences with nearly 5,000 performances as the scheming Dolly Levi in "Hello, Dolly" on Broadway.

Channing says she kept her racial identity hidden for years. "Betty Buckley and the cast will dedicate tonight's performance in San Diego to her memory".

He was listed as "colored" on his birth certificate because of his mother, though his father was Nordic German.

She then married TV producer and manager Charles Lowe. He reportedly viewed every one of her performances from out front, leading the applause.

Carol filed for divorce in 1998 but her estranged husband died before the divorce was finalised.

She said they only had sex twice in four decades.

"The only thing about control freak victims is that they don't know who they are", she told The Washington Post. And I didn't realize it wasn't my fault. I'm going to live. Channing moved to Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs, California, in 2000 to write her memoirs.

Tributes poured in for Carol on Twitter with one person writing: "Goodbye to Carol Channing, with much gratitude to her for providing so much joy".

She went on to rekindle her romance with her school sweetheart, Harry Kullijian, and the pair tied the knot in 2003 but he died in 2011.

Her parents asked: "Do you?"
