In a separate case, the Justice Department said Huawei stole robotic technology from carrier T-Mobile US Inc.

The Justice Department also charged that when Huawei became aware of the USA investigation in 2017, the company's American affiliate tried to obstruct that work by trying to move witnesses with knowledge about Huawei's Iran-based business back to China, where FBI agents could not interview them.

David Martin, Meng's lawyer in Canada, didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment. The United States has embarked on a global campaign to block Huawei from providing the backbone of the next generation of wireless technology, known as 5G, saying the company poses risks to national security.

Meng was arrested in early December 2018 by Canadian authorities at the request of the USA over allegations that she had committed fraud in sidestepping sanctions. Ltd., to bypass sanctions placed against Iran.

Huawei also is accused of obstructing justice by providing a false report claiming the attempts at stealing T-Mobile tech were the work of rogue employees, rather the company as a whole.

At the heart of the case against Huawei is the claim that the company misled regulators about its business dealings with Iran, with Meng allegedly playing a key role in that effort.

The announcement includes a 10-count grand jury indictment in Seattle, and a separate 13-count case from prosecutors in the Eastern District of NY.

Prosecutors also accused Meng of committing fraud and misleading banks into believing Skycom and Huawei were separate.

"Huawei and its senior executives repeatedly refused to respect US law and standard global business practices", Wray added.

During a press conference this afternoon, the Department of Justice did just that, indicting the Chinese telecommunication company on 13 counts including money laundering, obstruction of justice, and sanction violations.

Meng, who is free on bail in Vancouver after her arrest December 1 at the behest of US authorities, is charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit both.

She was arrested on December 1 in Canada. The other subsidiary facing charges is none other than Huawei USA.

Documents filed in a NY federal district court allege that Meng and Skycom, which is registered in Hong Kong but operates in Iran, handled millions of dollars in deals and orders with the Iranians in violation of these sanctions.

"For years, Chinese firms have broken our export laws and undermined sanctions, often using the United States financial system to facilitate their illegal activities", Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary, said.
