The incident began just before 9pm on Saturday in the terminal's food court, when the man pulled out a knife and placed a metal object on a table, claiming it was a bomb, after an argument with a woman.

Police released the image today, Commissioner Ian Stewart said, to "show you what our officers faced and to reinforce that was don't shut down an worldwide airport lightly".

Queensland Police told AAP on Saturday night a man had been arrested.

Police will allege the exclusion zone in Surfers Paradise was a precaution related to the Brisbane Airport incident.

Police tweeted there have been no reports of injuries to any members of the public or police.

There was locked down at the Brisbane worldwide airport in Australia on Sunday after a man flaunted a knife and made a bomb threat at a food court.

The device was found to be "inert", but Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said its complex appearance "indicates just the extraordinary lengths that a person has gone to create a perception of risk, threat and fear".

"I have absolutely no doubt that it was an absolutely terrifying experience for those that saw that".

He is due to appear before the Brisbane Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Assistant Police Commissioner Peter Crawford said the man's statements led police to search a number of premises and vehicles for improvised explosive devices.

The Australian federal police and Queensland police are at the airport, while airport line trains have been suspended.

When an officer was asked if the local incident could be related to the earlier Brisbane situation, they reportedly told the Gold Coast Bulletin: "It seems to be a very similar incident".
