Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday Feb. 4 slammed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump in which he said he wants to keep U.S. troops in Iraq “to watch Iran.”

Baghdad's position has also been complicated by Trump's shock decision to pull troops out of Syria, prompting pro-Iran factions to step up calls for an accelerated U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

"The troops...in Iraq are operating based on the agreement between the government of Iraq and the United States for the specific mission of combating terrorism", Salih said during a Monday interview with The Daily Beast in Baghdad.

'It is now time to start coming home and, after many years, spending our money wisely, ' Trump wrote on Twitter.

US President Donald Trump has declared his intention to wind down his country's 2,000 troops in Syria, but a report issued on Monday (Feb 4) warned the extremist group could then make a comeback within six to 12 months.

In a recent interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation", Trump said the U.S. has an "incredible base" in Iraq that he intends to keep, "because I want to be able to watch Iran".

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have sent weapons and thousands of soldiers to Syria to help shore up the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a seven-year civil war there.

Trump is expected to speak to the gathered foreign ministers at the State Department-hosted conference on Wednesday is widely expected to reiterate and expand on his anti-IS message from the State of the Union, officials said.

Opponents included every senator considering a 2020 presidential run, and four Republicans, who said US foreign policy needs a rethink.

'We do have to keep pressure on this network.

The president defended his decision in December to withdraw troops from Syria but refused to provide a timetable for the pullout, which drew criticism from members of his own Republican Party and concerns among some allies.

He declined to put a timeline on withdrawing from Syria, vaguely saying "at a certain point, we want to bring our people back home", first going to bases in Iraq and then to the US.

President Donald Trump speaks to members of the USA military.

If the SDF strikes a deal with Damascus following the USA withdrawal, Shoebridge said, "the Syrian government could fill that vacuum, and continue with their very successful campaign against ISIS themselves".

At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Votel said the Islamic State occupies less than 20 miles of territory and has about 20,000 to 30,000 fighters, adding, "We don't fully know".

Trump's remarks on monitoring Iran by way of Baghdad also appear to violate the basis of US involvement in the region.

Those negotiations, he adds, have been based on the premise that Al Asad would be used to continue the fight against IS. His visit sparked outrage in Iraq when he failed to meet with any Iraqi officials.

That day, Afghanistan's Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said the United States had not officially mentioned anything about reducing its military presence in Afghanistan, Khaama Press (KP) reported.

The US leader was also facing opposition yesterday from his own side on calling a state of national emergency to seize funding for his main domestic initiative - the wall he wants to build on the Mexican border. Iraqi military personnel discovered and managed to defuse three Grad rockets pointed at the base set with electronic timers.
