More fundamentally, Abrams must represent her entire party with an appeal aimed at both a base desperate to reclaim the White House and a wider swath of less-partisan Americans who are uneasy with the Trump administration.

During an off-the-record lunch for television anchors on Tuesday before the speech, Trump offered scathing assessments of a number of leading Democrats, including some lining up to run against him next year.

Trump took a thinly veiled shot at the Mueller investigation and the numerous potential investigations Democratic lawmakers plan to open, saying, "If there is going to be peace and legislation, there can not be war and investigation". He warned emboldened Democrats that "ridiculous partisan investigations" into his administration and businesses could hamper a surging American economy.

Throughout the 35-day shutdown, Trump made multiple attempts to convince Democrats and the public of the need for a border wall.

Mr. Trump and Pelosi have sparred for weeks since she took control. With another shutdown deadline looming, the president has few options for getting Congress to fund a border wall, and he risks further alienating his party if he tries to circumvent lawmakers by declaring a national emergency instead. With that deadline 10 days away, Trump called on lawmakers "to defend our very risky southern border" from gangs and drugs.

Pelosi has repeatedly said the House will not provide money to build a wall.

House Speaker and top Democrat Nancy Pelosi stood up to applaud US President Donald Trump during his second State of the Union address on Tuesday night as he called for an end to "revenge politics". "No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58 percent of the newly created jobs previous year", he said, and he seemed genuinely surprised when a number of female Democrats, all clad in white, stood and cheered. He looked out on the largest contingent of women ever assembled in Congress, many of them clad in white to honor the suffragists of the early 20th century.

Julius Peppers: "It's not goodbye, It's see ya later"
He missed four games in 2002, his rookie season, then played in 254 out of a possible 256 games over the rest of his career . Peppers also thanked former Bears coaches Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli and Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher .

Democrats won the House of Representatives in the 2018 Elections while Republicans retained the Senate. He announced details of a second meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, outlining a February 27-28 summit in Vietnam. Hank Johnson said he would "rather be somewhere else than listening to (Trump) come onto our floor & start talking about groups of people, particularly Latinos, and disparaging them as a people", he wrote on Twitter.

Both actions mark a paradigm shift in American foreign policy, with Afghanistan being the site of the longest military conflict in US history and Syria being home to a complicated fight that features forces like the Islamic State, Russia, Iran and U.S-backed Kurdish fighters.

Trump defended his contentious plans to reduce US troop levels in Syria and Afghanistan.

"You weren't supposed to do that", Trump joked, as even the congresswoman who said "we're gonna impeach the motherf***er" smiled and cheered.

"I agree with the president that NAFTA has failed working Mainers, but his NAFTA 2.0 proposal needs significant changes to ensure we don't repeat the same disastrous trade policies that have led to closed mills, outsourced jobs, and stagnant wages". In a recent appearance before Congress, the nation's intelligence chiefs said that North Korea is unlikely to give up all of its nuclear weapons and that ISIS is still "dangerous".

Trump and Pelosi shook hands before the speech, pleasant enough.

Those close to Abrams say her response calls for a more unified society with shared prosperity.
