Schiff: 'I Can Understand' Why Trump Is Terrified Of Investigations

In response, Trump called Schiff a "political hack" and said he has "no basis to do that".

Schiff has indicated that he will re-open parts of the committee probe, which Republicans closed last March, concluding there was no evidence of conspiracy or collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.

Two Republican members of the panel, Reps.

The Republican majority in the last Congress ended the probe in March, stating that they agreed with the intelligence community's assessment of Russia's campaign influence operation "except with respect to Putin's supposed preference for candidate Trump". Last month, Cohen cited threats from Trump for postponing testimony before an open hearing of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee set for February 7.

Trump's former fixer is a central figure in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign. The investigation, Schiff said, would also explore whether Trump or his associates have "sought to influence USA government policy in service of foreign interests" and any potential obstruction into the various investigations.

Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, speaks to members of the media outside the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 17.

Cohen, who is expected to begin a three-year prison sentence next month for lying to Congress and committing financial crimes, was due to appear before the House Intelligence panel for a closed-door interview this week.

In remarks to the press following the newly constituted committee's first organizational meeting on Wednesday, Schiff fired back.

Stone is accused of lying to Congress about the 2016 campaign's efforts to use stolen emails to undercut Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

House Intelligence Committee Republicans said in a joint statement that they're "happy" about making "all the transcripts available to the executive branch, including the Special Counsel's office, as part of the process of publishing them for the American people to see".

Democrats have long questioned whether some witnesses lied to lawmakers during those interviews, and they plan to make obstruction of justice another focus of their planned probe.

It is unclear if the special counsel has explicitly requested access to any additional transcripts.

Democrats also opposed a Republican motion at the meeting Wednesday to subpoena several witnesses.

Among the transcripts are interviews with Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.; his son-in-law, Jared Kushner; his longtime spokeswoman, Hope Hicks; and his former bodyguard Keith Schiller.

Democrats complained forcefully past year that Republicans had blocked their effort and denied their request to subpoena key witnesses.
