England's official Twitter account wrote: "We're deeply saddened to hear that Gordon Banks, our #WorldCup-winning goalkeeper, has passed away".

"A fierce opponent and a good man. Rest in peace, Gordon Banks #DieMannschaft", it tweeted. You don't get too many like him, and he was immensely modest for all talent.

He made 73 caps for England while during his club career, he won the League Cup with Stoke and Leicester.

Banks is also remembered for winning the 1972 League Cup with Stoke, in what remains to be the club's only major trophy.

He was named FIFA's goalkeeper of the year on six occasions and was part of the Three Lions team that won the 1966 World Cup.
