PM’s plan to rush Brexit ratification through Parliament by March 29

"It is very clear the government's position is the same, we triggered Article 50. that had a two year timeline, that ends on March 29, we want to leave with a deal and that is what we are working for", she said.

The spokesman declined to discuss reports that senior negotiator Olly Robbins was overheard in a Brussels bar saying that Mrs May planned to wait until the end of March before confronting MPs with a choice between her deal or a lengthy delay to Brexit.

The group including Labour MP Yvette Cooper and Tory former ministers Sir Oliver Letwin and Nick Boles said their plan was created to prevent the country drifting into a no-deal Brexit "by accident".

He was said to have indicated that if MPs did not vote for a deal, then the delay to the UK's final departure would be "a long one".

But those MPs, who are part of the European Research Group (ERG) in favour of a harder Brexit, also fear that a long delay to the Article 50 deadline for leaving the EU could ultimately lead to the cancellation of Brexit. "The way forward is cross-party, not kicking the can towards a disastrous no deal", he said on Twitter.

The Scottish government has stepped up its preparations for a no-deal Brexit as it again called on Theresa May to rule out the possibility.

No 10 insists Mrs May still plans to hold a vote on a deal as soon as possible but Labour has accused her of "running down the clock" in an effort to "blackmail" MPs into backing her deal.

"It is the only way of giving the House of Commons the time to produce a consensus about a positive way forward if the PM can not get her deal through by mid-March".

If parliament does not ultimately approve a deal, under current legislation Britain will leave without an agreement, an outcome many businesses say would be catastrophic for the world's fifth largest economy by causing major delays at ports, fracturing worldwide supply chains and hindering investment.

"By getting the changes we need to the backstop; by protecting and enhancing workers' rights and environmental protections; and by enhancing the role of parliament in the next phase of negotiations I believe we can reach a deal that this House can support", May said.

Parliament overwhelmingly rejected it in a vote on January 15, marking an historic defeat for the prime minister.

European Union leaders have turned down May's plea to renegotiate parts of the legally binding Brexit withdrawal bill, making the no-deal outcome more likely even though both sides believe it would harm their economies.

Downing Street has denied that Theresa May is taking a no-deal Brexit off the table.

And a cross-party initiative backed by Conservative Anna Soubry and Labour's Chuka Umunna demands that the Government publish its most recent official briefing on the implications of a no-deal Brexit for business and trade.

The Prime Minister is sticking to the idea of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union on March 29, leaving many to fear it resulting in a no deal Brexit.

The EU is urging May to work with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to unlock ratification of the withdrawal agreement she negotiated with Brussels.

"She's determined to try and avoid a no-deal Brexit if she can, because she recognizes in talking to business that this could be very damaging for the United Kingdom economy and ergo jobs", Tony Smurfit, chief executive of Irish packaging group Smurfit Kappa, told Reuters.
