McIlroy cut the margin to two shots after three holes but could get no closer, with six back nine birdies being too little, too late.

Rory McIlroy finished in second and tried to put a little pressure on Johnson.

While the Holywood star (29) raced home in 31, even when closing with a bogey for a four-under 67 to Johnson's 66 to finish five behind, back-to-back rulings on the fifth and sixth holes altered the entire dynamic of what was shaping up to be an epic, toe-to-toe battle at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Tiger Woods got his first top-10 finish of the year, but it wasn't all that inspiring.

The 34-year-old Johnson became one of six players since 1966 to win 20 times on the PGA Tour before turning 35, joining Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Woods and Phil Mickelson.

"All week I've really had control of the golf ball, I hit a lot of really good golf shots and rolled the putter pretty good", he told a media conference after his win.

Justin Thomas had the week's best round with a 62 on Sunday that allowed him to move up 28 spots to a solo ninth at 9 under. This is a big win for me.

"My game is right there, I'm really happy with everything. To get 20 wins, that's a very big accomplishment and I'm very proud of myself for doing it".

Third-round leader Aaron Baddeley shot a 72 to tie for second with Daniel Berger (66), Roger Sloan (67) and Johnson Wagner (69).

Whether or not Johnson exaggerated his stance is debateable but the free drop gave the American a shot to the green, and he took advantage, finding the surface from 160 yards before two-putting from 52 feet for par.

Johnson made an 8-foot birdie, the lead was up to five shots and Johnson took it from there.

"I didn't let it bother me", Johnson said, "because i knew there was plenty of holes I could make birdie on coming down the stretch".

He then followed that up with a three-putt on hole 16, proving it just was not to be his week on the greens.

He kicked it into high gear on the back nine with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and then strung together three birdies in a row beginning at the par-four 14th.

Johnson is just the 38th player to win 20 times on Tour, and the first since Davis Love III accomplished the feat in 2008.
