Florida Mom Discovers Suicide Instructions in YouTube Videos For Children

Tips for committing suicide are appearing in children's cartoons on YouTube and the YouTube Kids app.

A mother recently found an instructional video showing kids how to kill themselves.

On her blog, Hess says "self-harm and suicidal-promoting content" is a big problem.

Hess has been blogging about the inappropriate YouTube Kids videos, saying, "I wish I could say that they are isolated incidents but unfortunately I cannot".

YouTube sent a statement to Ars Technica about the videos.

Many parents are stepping up and contacting YouTube Kids and asking them to do a better job screening the videos so they are actually safe for kids to watch.

The original video has since been removed from YouTube and YouTube Kids, but there's nothing stopping someone from posting another like it. The sinister content is fused into cartoon videos in such a way that parents won't suspect a thing unless they decide to sit down with the kid to watch the entire cartoon. Free Hess, a pediatrician and mother, told the Post the scene has been spliced into videos from the Nintendo game Splatoon on YouTube and YouTube Kids.

The cars then were pushed out of the fire area to create an artificial break in the fire, he added. The Karnataka Fire Department said that nearly 300 cars were gutted in the fire.

The mother also goes to compile videos of Minecraft videos with multiple shooting scenes including one within a school.

The YouTube Kids page says: 'We use a mix of filters, user feedback and human reviewers to keep the videos in YouTube Kids family friendly.

"Every quarter we remove millions of videos and channels that violate our policies and we remove the majority of these videos before they have any views", the spokesperson said. She recorded it, wrote about it and reported the content to the video-sharing platform, she said.

Dr Nadine Kaslow, a past president of the American Psychological Association, told The Post that it is a "tragic" situation in which "trolls are targeting children and encouraging children to kill themselves".

Children's charity the NSPCC has accused YouTube of failing to tackle risky content on its youth channel. She has been working towards bringing these videos down after an outcry from parents and child care professionals alike. Still, she said, it's not enough.

In her post, shared in the Love Westhoughton Facebook group, she said: "When I collected him from school the teacher asked to talk to me". "I would like them to recognize the dangers associated with this for our children [and] to be taking parents' concerns seriously", she said.

She added that there should be "serious consequences" for those who had a hand in the videos, noting that it was "very worrisome" that they were targeting children.
