Facebook Doesn't Allow Phone Number 'Look Up' Opt-Out

Facebook is using your 2FA phone number for 'look up' search feature

People can still search for you even after hiding your phone number when someone uploads your contact information to Facebook from their mobile phone but is way harder than using their phone number since facebook put up measures that limit how often people could search after being warned by security researchers that user account information could be scrapped by scammers.

Facebook had partly disabled such phone-number searches in the past, preventing people from finding someone's profile directly from their number: in April 2018, the ad biz said it had switched off phone number search following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, citing abuse.

But, it was not previously clear that this also includes numbers provided to the site only for security reasons. Then click "Who can look you up using the phone number you provided?" and change the dropdown box from "Everyone" to "Friends".

Now, users who once added their phone number for security are faced with a privacy setting that asks them who can look them up using that number.

Worse still is the fact that this option is set to "everyone" by default.

House Democrats Launch Wide-Ranging Trump Investigations
But the sweeping document requests also raised immediate questions about House Democrats' strategy for probing the Administration. Nancy Pelosi has backed off suggestions from those in her party who seek to impeach President Donald Trump .

Outrage over Facebook's phone-number slurping was sparked on Friday by Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge, who publicly criticized Mark Zuckerberg's information-harvesting operation for making users searchable via phone numbers submitted for the ostensible objective of account security. Users have the option to remove their phone number from their account, though that would preclude using it for account recovery. Facebook had admitted past year to using the data collected under the guise of security to target users with advertisements.

Dailymail.com has reached out to Facebook for comment. First and foremost, there's a good reason to suspect the social networking service's two-factor authentication feature is about further weakening user privacy much more than it is about strengthening security.

'Now it can be searched and there's no way to disable that'. According to Burge, if you delete Facebook, it'll keep your data under the pretense it's used for Instagram or WhatsApp - which it can do thanks to the phone number's new role as a unifying identification tool. And, you can't opt-out.

A Facebook spokesperson simply told TechCrunch how the feature is not new, and how it affects all other phone numbers that you add on your Facebook account, not just the number you use for 2FA.
