Sanders used his story in a contrast to Trump's privileged background as the son of a wealthy real estate developer in NY.

"My experience as a child, living in a family that struggled economically, powerfully influenced my life and my values". "I know where I came from, and that is something I will never forget".

Trump plans to speak to a gathering of conservatives in suburban Maryland, where he is expected to emphasize the White House's political message that Democrats are rallying behind what his team is calling the policies of "socialism".

Noting that ideas previously characterized as "crazy and extreme" by the Democratic establishment are now considered mainstream, Sanders declared, "We are now on the brink of not just winning an election, but transforming this country".

The Vermont senator vowed to "change a system in which tens of thousands every single year get criminal records for possessing marijuana, but not one major Wall Street executive went to jail for destroying our economy in 2008".

"I did not have a father who gave me millions of dollars to build luxury skyscrapers, casinos and country clubs", he said. Billed as a "Rally at Navy Pier with Bernie Sanders", the campaign event is set to begin at 7 p.m. local time. Sanders promised police reform "led at the federal level, which says that lethal force is the last resort, not the first".

But even as Sanders broadened the scope of his stump speech to include more details about his youth, his message never strayed far from the core argument that would vault him to political stardom decades later.

He had begun his 2016 campaign in Vermont, which he has represented in the Senate for almost two decades.

Trump let loose against House Democrats broadening their investigations of him, predicted he would win re-election by a greater margin that his 2016 victory, taunted some of his potential White House challengers and sounded themes that are staples of his rallies.

Many are long-held principles previously dismissed as too radical by more moderate Democrats but are now more widely accepted talking points as he squares off against several other progressives who have embraced many of his issues.

He attended the University of Chicago, and in the 1960s and 1970s participated in anti-war and civil rights activism, like the 1963 March on Washington. We are going to bring our people together, the Senator added. "My years here in Chicago gave me the opportunity to become involved with the civil rights movement, with the labor movement, in the peace movement [against the Vietnam War], and in electoral politics".

"Legislation that, uh, benefits African-Americans yeah we passed but not specifically you know we passed legislation that benefits working people sure", Sanders responded.

Sander's Saturday speech saw various reactions among social media users.

"Do not allow Trump and friends to divide us up", Sanders warned.
