Tiger Woods withdraws from Arnold Palmer over neck problem

Tiger announced in a pair of tweets that he would be withdrawing from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, citing a neck strain.

Woods says he's had the neck strain for a few weeks and it hasn't improved with treatment to the point he feels he can play.

The 14-time major victor insists that it is not a long-term complaint, but his history of back injuries makes the concern inevitable.

I'd like to send my regrets to the Palmer family and the Orlando fans. "It's connection to Arnold makes it one of my favourite tournaments and I'm disappointed to miss it".

A week later, he played in the WGC Mexico Championship and finished tied for 10th.

The Players Championship is from March 14 to 17 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The 14-time major victor finished tied for 10th at the 2019 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship on February 24 in Mexico City. Fan favorite Rickie Fowler, 2018 runner-up Bryson DeChambeau and 2017 victor Jason Day are other big names scheduled to play this week.

The week's Arnold Palmer Invitational was set to be Woods' 19th appearance at the event, which also celebrates its 40th anniversary.

In his only other starts this year, Woods finished in a share of 20th place at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January followed by a T15 at the Genesis Open in mid-February.

Assuming Woods plays next week and comes out of it with no injuries, then he will likely add one (or maybe even two) more tournaments to his schedule before Augusta.

Woods' eight victories at the PGA Tour event at Bay Hille is a record, shared with Sam Snead, for most wins at a single event.
