Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel Review #3

Why 'Captain Marvel' Matters

Why 'Captain Marvel' Matters

Maria's struggle to re-attach the emotional tether swinging just beyond Carol's confused grasp hints at the film Captain Marvel might have been with a more relaxed, nuanced approach to the story. He's telling her not to be so human, but Vers's earthly identity is exactly what she needs to discover. The Skrulls are the scurrilous interlopers: green-skinned, lizardy elfin-eared shape-shifters, led by the wily Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who could be impersonating just about anyone, including your closest ally. Any Kree soldier could be a Skrull in disguise.

The tone lightens temporarily when Vers's mission takes her crashing to Earth, straight into 1995 and through the roof of a Blockbuster video store, a source of cheap nostalgic laughs. Nick Fury, without the eye-patch, made to look 20 years younger by digital FX and played, of course, by Samuel L. Jackson, who's terrific once again but allows Larson to shine as well. After all, his character Nick Fury is the one who pulls out the pager to call Carol Danvers in that iconic Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene, so he would likely know.

She'll also cross paths with a cat, who's a surprise package. Wait, didn't James Bond wear that stunt out? It sort of takes a bit to get going in that Sci-Fi sort of way as it finds its footing into a hero origin film as soon as Danvers meets Fury.

In the six years between Mar-Vell's death and the rise of Carol Danvers as a superhero, the Tesseract apparently just sat hidden in her laboratory, in cloaked orbit above Earth, which raises a few questions. It is also one of the film's best action sequences, with all those flashes of light zapping across the screen finally put to good effect. Larson glares a lot, as she should.

"Honestly, since they won't tell us anything about "Avengers".

While she plays a key role in this first entry in the Captain Marvel mythology, Lynch's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains up in the air. I appreciate it. And I look forward to talk about our theories and our favorite scenes after we watch Captain Marvel together.

However, the newspaper reports bosses decided last week the King of Pop's back catalogue will no longer make it onto the air. Piers then chimed in with his own story about Jackson, in which he announced: "I interviewed him once over the telephone".

Boden and Fleck are low-key American neorealists, and in Captain Marvel they barely retain a vestige of their signature style.

Focusing the need for greater female visibility (both behind and in front of cameras) around a single day also runs the risk of women's participation becoming a "special" or unusual event rather than something so equal that it becomes commonplace and unremarkable.

A remake of a 2015 Israeli drama, Sara Colangelo's Kindergarten Teacher is a odd, eccentric little film, but a brilliant one. On her journey through time she meets women who did not have the opportunities she had in life due to patriarchy and sexism having greater power in WWII and the late 1950s than in her own time.

Captain Marvel releases on March 8. "And obviously Marvel is such an incredible platform to be able to share in storytelling and probably the biggest platform in terms of movies today". While the film will introduce Larson as Marvel's latest superhero, the actress admitted that the part changed her life in ways she never expected.
