"For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected", Lelling said.

In many cases, the students were not aware that their parents had arranged for the cheating, prosecutors said, although in other cases they knowingly took part.

The sums that authorities say the accused parents paid in bribes would, for many, finance a college education many times over.

The bribes reportedly went has high as $6 million.

Elizabeth Venturini, founder of College Career Results, said, "On the admissions papers, it's marked off whether the parents have some type of relationship with the school".

The Department of Justice announced dozens of arrests Tuesday, surrounding a nationwide college admissions scheme.

That cooperation included leading investigators to William "Rick" Singer of California, the architect of the bribery scheme, who agreed to cooperate with authorities as well last September.

"There were essentially two kinds of fraud that Singer was selling", Lelling said of the accusations, which run from 2011 to 2019.

For example, Singer and his co-conspirators used photo-editing technology to superimpose the face of a patron's student onto stock photos of athletes, prosecutors said.

Trump ex-campaign chief Manafort indicted for mortgage fraud
State Department officials in Kiev in 2013, suggesting that the government at least had some awareness of what he was doing. Trump on Wednesday described the Manafort situation as "sad", but added that he wasn't familiar with the NY charges.

The payments were made to Singer's fake Newport Beach, California charity, Key Worldwide Foundation, and to non-profits managed by the coaches, which allowed the parents to deduct the payoffs and bribes from their taxes. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges including conspiracy to commit racketeering and conspiracy to commit money laundering, and he is slated to be sentenced in June.

Loughlin and "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman were among some 50 charged Tuesday in connection with the scheme. On her second test, allegedly taken by her in December 2017, she had a miraculous improvement of 400 points, scoring a 1420, according to the Times.

Huffman also discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with a cooperating witness, the complaint says. MA state criminal defense attorney Dakota Martin echoed Molari, telling HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY, that, the penalty for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, which Huffman and Loughlin are both charged with, could get them "up to 20 years in prison, a fine (up to $1 million if a financial institution is involved), or both".

"As a first-generation American, you really put your foot forward to excel in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities and it's just unfair for people of privilege and privileged families to get an easy pass", Shehadeh said.

Henriquez was arrested in New York City and released on $500,000 bail after a brief appearance in Manhattan federal court Tuesday.

Also among those indicted are designer Mossimo Giannulli, who founded the Mossimo clothing brand, and his wife Lori Loughlin, best known as Aunt Becky on the show "Full House".

Loughlin turned herself in to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday morning and is scheduled for a court appearance in the afternoon, spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Telephone messages seeking comment have been left with Caplan, who is accused of paying $75,000 to get a test supervisor to correct the answers on his daughter's ACT exam after she took it.

Officials say Operation Varsity Blues is only about a year old, but the case authorities were working on when the initial tip about the scheme came out is unknown.
