Trump Again Threatens Europe With Tariffs: Expect Instant Global Recession - Mish Talk

The day after a Republican-controlled Senate voted to reject President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration at the southern border, POTUS staged a TV event to issue his first veto.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., had said he would oppose the declaration but reversed course on the Senate floor, saying that he was "sympathetic" to Trump's push to deal with the crisis at the border.

Moments after the Senate voted 59-41 to disapprove his emergency declaration on Thursday, Trump gave his one-word response: "VETO!" The House previously passed the resolution last month, 245 (including 13 Republicans) to 182.

Trump's veto sends the resolution back to the U.S. House of Representatives, which is expected to pick it up after the week-long congressional recess.

The Republican senators who rebuked Trump were unwavering in their justification, saying Thursday they viewed the unilateral move as unconstitutional and creating a risky precedent for future presidents.

Trump called the resolution reckless and said he was proud to veto it.

The border wall project still faces a variety of legal challenges, and despite Trump's veto, House and Senate votes against the emergency declaration could carry some weight in the courts.

Trump originally declared a national emergency on the border last month after Congress granted only a fraction of the $5.7 billion he requested for a wall on the border.

The declaration of an emergency allowed the administration to access over $6bn in additional funds not appropriated by Congress to build the wall. Trump was surrounded in the Oval Office by supporters who offered profuse thanks and frequent applause. Unless more Republicans defect from the president's position, neither margin would be sufficient to override a veto. But for those who broke from party ranks to vote for the termination resolution, the president said they were "doing what they have to do", adding that he did not pressure them for their vote.

Alexander added that he shares the president's goal of border security, but warned allowing Trump to redirect money without authorization could set a risky precedent.

The resolution was approved in the aftermath of the killing of US-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

The president made a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign for the White House. Ahead of the voting, Trump framed the issue as with-him-or-against-him on border security, a powerful argument with many.
