Christchurch attack changes everything for team security- New Zealand Cricket

The Bangladesh team were on a bus that was approaching the Al Noor mosque, where 41 people died, on the eve of the third test at nearby Hagley Oval when the shooting began.

Bangladesh's worldwide cricket team survived the mass shooting in a New Zealand mosque by a split second. Their team bus was only about 50 yards from the mosque and players were anxious about how they would safely get out of the vehicle. In the wake of this frightful incident, New Zealand Cricket in consultation with Bangladesh Cricket Board have made a decision to call off the third Test scheduled to begin from March 16 at the Hagley Oval.

The Test has now been cancelled and the Bangladesh Cricket Board asked the team to return home at the earliest possible time.

Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal said it would be hard for the national cricket team to overcome the shock of narrowly escaping the shooting.

All the Bangladesh national cricket team players were escorted by heavily armed New Zealand police with loaded sub-machine guns to the entrance gate of the airport.

The players eventually returned to their hotel shaken, distressed, and in no mental state to consider playing cricket, Isam said.

The attack took place just after 1.30 pm local time.

In the brutal shootout carried out at two different mosques at least 49 people were killed while 40 others were injured that it prompted New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to term it a terrorist attack and one of New Zealand's darkest days.

"There were bodies all over me", he said.

"The worst part was we were watching all those things happening live, so it was very scary", said Tamim.

Bangladesh, by the way, have had an otherwise uneventful tour: Lost the three-match ODI series 0-3 and got defeated in the first two Tests.

New Zealand Cricket chief David White says "everything changes now" regarding team security in the country following the terror attack in Christchurch.

Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal tweeted "entire team got saved from active shooters".

"While the players will be on the flight out of Christchurch, I'm not sure about all members of the support staff, as some are foreigners", Ahmed Sajjadul Alam "Bobby", a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, informed. "Frightenning experience and please keep us in your prayers".

Mario Villavarayen, a strength and conditioning coach with the team, told New Zealand media that the players did not see the shooter, but heard shots.

The Bangladesh cricket team were lucky to escape unharmed this morning having been in attendance at the mosque where a gunman opened fire in New Zealand this morning.

Wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim also described the scenes of panic, saying the team had been "lucky" to escape the violence.

A spokesperson for New Zealand Cricket told Stuff it was an "unfolding situation" as to whether the match would go ahead. Stay safe and strong, New Zealand.

Visitors head home after almost getting caught up in the terror attack that left 49 people dead, as questions rise whether New Zealand is safe from acts of extreme violence or terrorist attacks.
