The 25-year-old will now meet Federer - the duo each having won two of their previous four encounters - after the Swiss was handed a walkover by virtue of Rafael Nadal's withdrawal on Saturday. "As I say before, is not only about today, is about tomorrow".

Now Thiem will play in his first final at the BNP Paribas Open, as well as his first Masters final on hardcourts, against a fresh-footed Federer eyeing career singles title No. 101. "It's not every day you get to play a quarter-final in Indian Wells, so I just tried to be focused and give my best".

Canada's Bianca Andreescu, 18, advanced to the women's final on Friday night with a thrilling three-set win over No. 6 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

"I wanted to try my best to be competitive today", Nadal told reporters, including tennis writer Carole Bouchard.

He couldn't convert his only break point against Raonic in the second, and Raonic managed to seize the tiebreaker aided by a favorable netcord bounce for a 5-3 lead.

Assuming he does take to the court, Nadal will face his great rival for a 39th time, looking to improve his winning record to 24-15.

He admitted that he sometimes is sad because he feels at a disadvantage against his opponents due to his continued knee issues that force him to limit his practice and playing time before he gathered himself.

Then he gathered himself, saying, "It's not the moment to complain much". "I warmed up today in the morning, and I felt that my knee was not enough good to compete at the level that I need to compete, to play semi-finals match of this event".

Nadal reached the final at the Australian Open, and while he lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic he said it was a positive sign after he had to pull the plug early on his 2018 season.

"Now is the process that I have to decide what direction we have to take to recover well and to recover as soon as possible".

"It's always something special to play [Federer] and also something special to compete in a Masters 1000 final", Thiem said after his semifinal match.
