Jolyon Palmer calls Vettel an amateur who panics in the heat of battle

The 31-year-old German's errors helped hand the title to Hamilton last season and by his high standards Vettel has had an indifferent start to this campaign.

"You're just trying to be nice but everybody's just f*****g it up".

The Mercedes duo have led the way in the early stages of the new Formula One season, with Hamilton second to Bottas in Australia before the roles were reversed in Bahrain last time out.

Championship leader Valtteri Bottas pushed Sebastian Vettel off the top of Friday's timesheets to end the opening day of practice for the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix with the fastest time for Mercedes.

At the end of a year ago it was calculated that 21% of the power unit lap time gain over the course of the 2018 season had come from the Shell fuels and lubricants - which Leclerc was keen to praise.

The German topped the time sheets in the first practice session of the weekend ahead of Mercedes AMG Petronas'Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.

"Being the first to adopt the two-stop with Max allowed us to beat Charles Leclerc today", said Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner after the race.

Tiger Woods shrugs off injury scare to sit one off the lead
Any other time, a hobbled Day might have might have been the story after getting up off the deck to shoot five-under 67. Oosthuizen posted the second-lowest number in round two - his 66 improving on the scores of Molinari and Day by one.

Ayrton Senna celebrated winning the European Grand Prix at Donnington in 1993 (David Jones/PA) Lewis Hamilton won his first world championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2008 (Rui Vieira/PA) Rubens Barrichello (322) has competed in more grands prix than any other driver.

"It's great for a real current superstar, a five-time world champion, to be talking about the possibility of racing in Formula E".

Among the sport's most loved characters, Kimi Raikkonen now has no more than 10 points on the Drivers' Rankings, with 2 races behind him.

Verstappen will now start the race in Shanghai in fifth place, behind the two Mercedes cars, Vettel in third and Leclerc in fourth. He's yet to stand anywhere on the podium.

Leclerc, who obeyed an order at the Australian Grand Prix to hold station behind Vettel, agreed the team is the top priority, but insists he doesn't want to play second fiddle to Vettel for long. "When you then can't do your final lap you know that the guys who are doing the lap have a chance of overtaking you".

There was even an issue for Vettel right at the end of the session, as he missed a call to the weigh bridge and stopped in the pit lane, with his Ferrari team having to run up to push him back to the FIA's garage.

As Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button all claimed a title each between 2007 to 2009, Adrian Newey, Sebastian Vettel and the Red Bull vehicle then became unstoppable for four straight years. I'm not happy about it, but it will swing around and it will come back onto others.
